Question
[1]The VOCs released by off-gassing of a newly painted room in a house is estimated at a rate of 6.2 (9.8) g h1 and the outdoor VOCs concentration is 0.014 (0.124) g m3 when the number of air exchanges per hour is 2.3 (1.2). If the floor space is 250 m2 and the room height is 2.5 m, what would you estimate the indoor concentration of the VOCs to be?
[2]The effluent from a pulp and paper operation has a COD of 209 ppm and a BOD of 4.9 ppm.
a)What can you conclude about the nature of the organic compounds in the effluent from the values of COD and BOD?
b)What volume of 0.050 M K2Cr2O7 would be required to completely oxidize the organics in a 50.0 mL sample of effluent?
Explanation / Answer
(2)
(a) If a compound have more organic matter more number of microbes to degrade it. Chemical oxygen demand values are always greater compared to BOD because COD contains both chemical and biological substances where as BOD contains only biological substances. So pulp and paper operation descirbes as per the hypothesis only.
