Question

It was a very hot day in August. The high was close to 100 degrees with high humidity. It was also the day of a major soccer tournament. Tessa was a very good soccer player who didn't like to take breaks for water or rest. As the game went on she became very hot and was sweating profusely. She began to feel nauseous, her heart was racing and she thought she might pass out. Her friends told her that her face was beet red. Using your knowledge of the skin explain what happened to Tessa? What do you think she should have done?

Explanation / Answer

When you run, you sweat. sweating works to cool down the body. The redness is due to dialation of capillaries in order to dissipate heat. The more you sweat, the more your blood volume decreases. The more your blood volume decreases, the harder your heart has to pump to deliver oxygen to your working muscles.Blood flow taken away from the stomach to supply the muscles causes nausea. Sweating and activity cause your body to lose water, and if you are losing more than you put in, you will become dehydrated. The dehydration lower BP leading to light headedness.

adequate hydration and periodic rests would have avoided the situation. Hyrdration would prevent the lowered blood pressure and rests would allow the heart rate to stabilize.
