Question

It's a cold April night in 1912 in the middle of the Atlantic ocean, you are on the Titanic. In the distance you see a large white object approaching the ship. You think it's pretty and not much danger to the ship so you carry on with your festivities. Later the large white object (an iceberg) hits the ship, and the ship begins to sink. As the ship is sinking you think, hm, it wasn't that big of an ice-berg (and of course this ship can't sink...). What percentage of the iceberg was under water? Let the density of the water be 1.0 g/cm3, and the density of the ice be 0.92 g/cm3. Express your answer as a percentage (not a decimal)

Explanation / Answer

Given:

Density of water = 1.0 g /cm3

Density of ice = 0.92 g / cm3

Solution:

Wet of portion of ice under water = wt of displaced water

Density of ice x volume (under water ) x g = Density of water x volume x g

Since g is constant and so cancelled from both side.

Therefore Volume percent of of ice under water

= density of ice / density of water

=0.92 / 1.00 x 100

= 92.0 %

Portion of ice under water = 92.0 %
