Question

The West Virginia Water Research Institute reported the following water quality measurements for the Monongahela River monitoring station at Mile 89 for August 2010.

pH = 7.79
ALK = 59.9 mg/L as CaCO3 Na+ = 44.7 mg/L
Ca2+ = 39.8 mg/L

Mg2+ = 10.6 mg/L

Cl? = 15.9 mg/L

SO2? = 146 mg/L 4

(a) Determine the concentration of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in the water in mol/L and in mg/L, assuming that HCO–3 is the only significant contributor to ALK and DIC.

(b) Check the cation–anion balance for this analysis.

Explanation / Answer

alkanlinity as CaCO3 = 59.9 mg / L

So moles /L of CaCO3 = 59.9 / 100=0.599 X 10^-3 moles / L

So moles of CaCO3 = moles of HCO3- = 0.599 X 10^-3 moles / L

so total dissolved inorganic ion =0.599 X 10^-3 moles / L

the strength in mg / L = molarity X molecular weight of HCO3- = 0.599 X 10^-3 X 61 g / L = 36.53 mg / L
