Then one performs another TLC experiment with a sample of Compound X that is contaminated with a small amount of Compound Y (whose Rf is 0.81), using the same procedures as for the pure sample of Compound X. What will be the effect on the TLC results due to the added presence of Compound Y? Solution :-

Chromatography is the separation technique which is used to separate the components of the mixture. The retention factor (Rf) value of the each components are different because they have different attraction towards the mobile phase and the stationary phase.

Chrmatography separation technique is based on the attraction (interacxtions ) of the component of the mixture with the mobile phase and stationary phase.

Therefore if the component x is contaminated with the component y which both have significant difference in the Rf values in the pure state. But when its contaminated then in the TLC for the one sample spot it will show two sponts for the components x and y or it may apprear as a band intead of the individual spots tberefore this makes difficult to find the exact Rf values of the both components. Also the Rf values may differe from the original Rf values because the contaminated sample may have the difference in the attractions towards the mobile phase and stationary phase as compare to the orginal pure samples.

Thereofre the Rf values may differ

and it will show the band in the TLC insstead of the individual clear spots.
