What is the best technique to isolate ethyl acetate from ethanol and why? The options are extraction (liquid-liquid, solid-liquid, or acid-base), recrystallization, or distillation (simple, fractional, or vacuum). Can you please explain why? Thanks. Explanation / Answer
Extraction is best method to seperate ethyl acetate and ethanol. Because to the mixture add water then ethanol soluble in water due to formation of hydrogen bonds with water. but ethyl acetate cannot form any hydrogen bonds with water due to no free OH groups are present. so it remains in organic layer. from which we can extract both compounds from aqueous layer and organic layer
the distillation not possible because both have nearly equal boiling point values.
recrystallisation is also not possible since the freezing points are -114 C and -83 C for ethanol and ethyl acetate.
