Question

Test 1 for OH- and H+ ions

Use the graduated cylinder to measure and pour 10 mL of tap water into a test tube.
Add about 10 drops of 4.5% acetic acid to the water.
Test the resulting solution with blue litmus paper to confirm the presence of H+ ions. Record your observations in Table 2.
Discard your solution in the sink with water (this is a very dilute solution of vinegar). Rinse your test tube three times with water so that it will be clean for the next test.
Test 2 for OH- and H+

In a clean test tube add 10 mL of tap water.
Add 1/2 tsp. of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) to the water and stir gently.
Test the resulting solution with blue litmus paper to confirm the presence of OH- ions. Record your observations in Table 3.
Discard your solution in the sink with water (this is a very dilute solution of baking soda)

Explanation / Answer

Solution :-

Test 1

When the acetic aicd solution is tested with the blue litmus paper then it will change the blue litmus paper to red color

Because aceitic acid when added to water then it dissiciate to form the H+ and CH3COO- ions (acetic acid is weak acid )

Therefore

Acetic acid   ---------- > Blue litmus changes to Red   = H+ is present in the solution and confirmed

Test 2

Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) is the base therefore when it added to water then it forms the OH- ions

when the solution is tested with blue litmus then then blue litmus remains blue. this confirms the presence of the OH- in the solution

Therefore

Sodium bicarbonate -------- > Blue litmus remains blue = Confirms the presence of OH-
