Question
discussed food webs and food chains. Please compare AND contrast the two. Using examples from Hawk Mountain, please Provide and example of a feed web. To do this I want you to first pick a habitat at Hawk Mountain and then write it down. Then I want you to pick an organism and write it down. Then I want you to list 5 organisms that might eat this organism and list 5 organisms that might be eaten by this organism. Then what I want you to do is to pick a second habitat that at Hawk Mountain and describe it. Compare and contrast these two habitats and discuss how your food web might be different in this new habitat.
Explanation / Answer
A food chain is a linear depiction of flow of energy from one living organism to the other (from lower to higher trophic levels). It shows the dependence of the organisms of a habitat on each other for survival.
When 2 or more food chains interconnect due to common preys and predators, a network is formed called as the food web.
Habitat No.1 - mountain grassland
organism - ground squirrel
predators of ground squirrel - Golden hawk, Gray wolf, rattlesnakes, foxes, badgers
preys of ground squirrel - earthworms, grasshoppers, small mice, young snakes, crickets
Habitat No. 2 - forest
The forests of Hawk mountain are mixed deciduous ones. They comprise majorly of deciduous trees and a few conifers and evergreen trees(eg. pitch pine, pine, eastern hemlock); hence the name. It is originally a chestnut oak forest (got depleted due to blight). Oaks dominate the ridge tops while tulip populars and hemlocks are seen in the lower, wetter areas. Shrubs like striped maple, blueberries, rhododendron, sheep lauren, witch hazel, etc are also found.
The food webs of both the habitats will remain more or less same at the higher trophic levels, eg. the final predators would be eagles or hawks but the organisms at the lower trophic levels would change. This is because both the habitats are terrestrial one but vary in their vegetation (grasses in 1 and trees and shrubs in 2) as a result of which their inhabitants (eg white tailed deer in 1 and porcupines in 2) also would change.
