Question
I need help with number 6-44Add curved arrows to the mechanism shown in Problem 6-42 to indicate the electron movement in each step. The reaction of hydroxide ion with chloromethane to yield methanol and chloride ion is an example of a general reaction type called a nucleophilic substitution reaction: The value of Delta H degree for the reaction is -75 kJ/mol, and the value of Delta S degree is + 54 ]/(K mol). What is the value of Delta G degree (in kJ/mol) at 298 K.? Is the reaction exothermic or endothermic? Is it exergonic or endergonic? Methoxide ion (CH3O-) reacts with bromoethane in a single step according to the following equation:
Explanation / Answer
Q6.44 Solution :-
Given
Delta H= -75.0 kJ/mol
Delta S = 54 J/ mol K * 1 kJ*1000 J = 0.054kJ/ mol K
Formula to calculate the delta G rxn is as follows
Delta Grxn = Delta H- T*Delta S
= -75 kJ/mol – (298 K * 0.054 kJ/mol .K)
= -58.9 kJ/ mol
Therefore the delta G reaction = -58.9 kJ per mol
The enthalpy of the reaction is negative therefore it is exothermic reaction
