Question
thermodynamics Thermodynamics Please answer our problems neatly nad list all values you need to solve the problem. Answer the following question for 3 liquids. Hexane, water, and ammonia. You have a hot plate that can heat a 1 L cotainer of liquid at 5kJ/s, how long will it take to evaporate all the liquid? Make a plot of temperature verses time and a plot of mass verses time using excel or similar software. (yout can neglect the heating of the container and lose of heat to the environment, in other words, it it s adiabatic, all the heat is going to heat the liquid and the vapor can just escape the container, so the pressure will not increase) After reading your text book and the Wikipedia page about state functions, describe in your own words what a state function is. List 12 state functions. Using the equation from class on Wednesday(4.13) from the text book, estimate the heat of vaporization for ethanol at 102 degreeC is this higher or lower than its normal boiling point? What is the reason it is higher or lower?Explanation / Answer
First calculate the mass of hexane,water and ammonia in 1 L by its density:
NH3 = 0.759g/L
mass of NH3 = 0.759g
Hexane 659.4 g/L
Mass of hexane = 659.4 g
water = 1000 g/L
Mass of water = 1000 g
Heat of vaporization of water = 2257 kJ/1000 g
Heat of vaporization of NH3 = 1371 kJ/1000g
Heat of vaporization of hexane =365 kJ/1000 g
plate give heat 5 KJ/s now calculate the time of evaporation as follows:
Water:
=(2257 kJ/1000 g*1000 g )/ 5 KJ/s = 451.4 s or 7.5 min
NH3:
=(1371 kJ/1000 g*0.759g)/ 5 KJ/s = 0.208 s
Hexane
=(365 kJ/1000 g*659.4 g)/ 5 KJ/s = 48 s
