Question

Show the reaction of pyridinium chloride with sodium hydroxide. Indicate which layer (aqueous or organic) each component in the reaction will mainly reside in (For both products and reactants).

Show the reaction of p-cresol with KOH. Indicate which layer (aqueous or organic) each component in the reaction will mainly reside in.

Show the reaction of formic acid wih NaHCO3 (sodium bicarbonate). Indicate which layer (aqueous or organic or both) each component in the reaction will mainly reside in. (Note that formic acid is somewhat polar!)

Explanation / Answer

1) C10H7NH2·HCl + NaOH ---------> C10H7NH2 +H2O +NaCl
products: C10H7NH2 should reside in the organic layer and NaCl in the aqueous layer.

2) C6H5-C6H4-OH + KOH -----------> C6H5-C6H4-O- + K+ + H2O
products: 4-phenylphenol in the organic layer, and the potassium salt in the aqueous layer.

3) 2RCO2H + NaHCO3 ------------> 2RCO2Na + H2O + CO2
products: H2O and the carboxylate will be in the aqueous layer.
carbon dioxide will bubble out.
