Question

For h. The element...similar to Mg.

Please explain if possible

Answer the following questions with the symbol of the element that fits the description. The element in period 4 with the least metallic character The element in period 3 most likely to form an ion with a +3 charge The element in group VA (15) with the greatest metallic character The alkaline earth metal with the smallest atomic radius The halogen with the highest ionization energy The element in period 2 most likely to form an ion with a - 2 charge The element in period 3 with the largest atomic radius The element in period 6 that displays physical and chemical properties similar to M The neutral element that is isoelectronic with Mg^2+

Explanation / Answer

a) Element in period 4 means the 4th row of the preiodic table. ---> Krypton (its a noble gas)

b) In period 3, means the 3rd row. For a metal to form a+3 ion, expect it in the 13th column. This is Aluminium, and is very known to form Al+3 ions

c) Group VA, means 15th column. MEtallic caracter --> There is only 1 metal and is Bismuth, Antimony (Sb) can't be since it is a metalloid

d) Alkaline earth metals are the 2nd column gruops. Berillium, MAgnesium Calcium, etc... The trend in the periodic table that show the smallest radium is Berillium (will be the smalles)

e) Hallogens are in the 7th group. Fluorine, Chlroiine, Bromine, Iodine. The most electronegative is Fluorine, this means it won't let electrons to go that easy. This is the highest ionization energy (energy required to form an ion)

f) Preiod 2 to form a -2 charge. This will be Oxygen which is pretty famous for havin -2 as a charge

g) 3rd period, means 3rd row. In this case, the periodic table trend of radii goes from left to tright (big to small). Therefore the only answer will be Na or Sodium

h) Period 6, row 6... This is similar to magnesium, meaning it is in the second column. Intersection gives you Ba or Barium

i) Isoelectronic means, same electrons as Mg2+... In order to have the same amount of electrons such as MG+2, you need to find a noble gas. In this cae the nearest numebr is that of Neon
