Sample : Crude benzoic acid + salt

Type 1. If you benzoic acid concentration is high enough.

The sample is in water, cool water in ice bath and benzoic acid should come out of solution. Salt remains dissolved. Filter the benzoic acid out on filter paper. The water layer will have dissolved salt in it.

step 2. If your benzoic acid concentration is low.

Boil water first to reduce volume and then repreat what you did in Type 1. to separate the acid from salt.

Note.: Benzoic acid is not very soluble in water as opposed to salt which is soluble both in cold and hot condition. So typical recrystallization technique would be to heat the mixture in minimum amount of water. On cooling benzoic acid reprecipitates out from the solution leaving behind salt.
