Question

Real Science - Provide at least 2 challenges that make ministration unlikely (at least in the scenario provided by the movie). Think about the information presented in Biology of B-Movie Monsters". "Reel" vs "Real" Science - Approximately how large is Track's submersible pd. As a reference, a red blood cell is about 8 micrometers wide. "Reel" vs. "Real" Science - Other that when the scientist is running. Tuck and his submersible pod are always shown to be very steady (not being bounced around). Knowing what you know about molecular motion (from 'Biology of B-Movies Monsters') do you think this is accurate? Why or why not?

Explanation / Answer

1. (a)When miniaturization occurs, the body size decreases at a certain scale keeping the relative linear proportions and shape, same. It is called scaling. For example if the length is doubled, the area gets chaged 4 times the old area and volume increases 8 times the old volume. Hence, the change in any linear dimension of body is related to many other aspects like area and volume. It affects the biology of complete body physiology. He will have imbalance in food intake, energy consumption, heat dissipation mechanisms and surface area. It will be very difficult for him to survive with altered physiology of hormones and enzymes.(b) Dependence on geometrical shapes of body affects many forces like gravitational force, adhesive forces and surface tension forces that supports the animal in doing routined tasks. For example, a human when miniaturized to the extent of microscopic size, he will have very less gravitational force on it and when he falls from greater heights he will have no injury.

2. Tuck's submersible pod could be transmitted through saliva without any knowledge to the host, so its size must be less than 8 micrometers approx, just the same size that of bacterias and viruses causing diseases because it was able to move freely inside the body through various nerves and internal body organs without any effect on the host.

3. It is not accurate because the molecules inside our body keep on moving in a constant vigorous motion due to thermal energy, and the motion is called brownian motion. It exerts pressure by colliding to the walls of our skin every second. So, the steady submersible pod cannot by a reality.
