2. Two types of tissues found in the central nervous system are, the gray matter and white matter. The gray matter derives its colour from the constituent cell bodies, dendrites and axon terminals that it carries, devoid of the mylein sheath. The white matter however contains the myelinated axons, which help to connect the neurons of the gray matter.
The orientation of te gray matter and white matter differ in the brain and the spinal cord. In the brain, the gray matter forms the outer covering and the white matter is towards the internal side. Whereas, in the spinal cord, the white matter is outside and the gray matter is inside.
The reason for such orientation is tha, the gray matter is responsible for processing of nervous information and signals, whereas the white matter helps in communication and transmission of signals.
