Question
Pearl River Bridge Superior Soy Sauce contains 1590 mg of sodium (Na+) per 15 mL (1 serving). Assume that all of this sodium comes from dissolved NaCl. A saturated solution of NaCl is 5.4M at room temperature.
A) Using the solubility of NaCl reported above what is the Ksp for NaCl at room temperature?
B) If equal volumes of Pearl River Bridge Superior Soy Sauce and concentrated hydrochloric acid (11.7 M HCl(aq)) are mixed, what will Qsp be for NaCl?
C) Based on this value of Qsp will solid NaCl precipitate from this mixture?
Explanation / Answer
A. For the saturated solution, Qsp = Ksp
Ksp = [Na+].[Cl-] = 5.4 × 5.4 mol2 . lit-2
= 29.16 mol2 . lit-2
B. Initially the 15 mL of sauce contains same concentration of Na+ and Cl-.
1590 mg Na+ = 1590/ 23 = 0.069 mol Na+
Initially [Na+]=[Cl-] = 0.069 * 1000/ 15 = 4.6 M
After adding 15 mL HCl total volume= 30 mL
[Cl-] from HCl = 11.7 * 15 / 30 = 5.85 M .....[ Apply equation V1S1 = V2S2 ]
After adding HCl ,
[Na+] = 4.6/2 = 2.3 M
[Cl-] = 2.3 + 5.85 = 8.15 M
Qsp = [Na+].[Cl-] = 2.3 × 8.15 = 18.75
C. No, as Qsp < Ksp
