Question
Based on a 60% yield.
a) How much salicylic acid and acetic anhydride would Atkinson Health Products need to make one million 100-tablet bottles of regular aspirin?
b) Based on the prices you found for salicylic acid and acetic anhydride, how much would these two reactants for one million bottles of aspirin cost? (For the acetic anhydride; $56.20 per kg. For the salicylic acid $110.50 per 500 g)
c) What additional production and marketing costs should Atkinson consider when making their decision to include aspirin in their product line?
Explanation / Answer
a)
1 100 tablet weight 100 mg
one million tablet will have= 10^6*100 mg of aspirim =10^8 mg = 10^5 g = 100 Kg
Molar mass of Aspirin = 180 g/mol
Number of moles of Aspirin = 100000 g/ 180 =555.56 mol
number of moles of salicylic acid and acetic anhydride required in 100 % yield = 555.56 mol
but yield is 60%
so,
number of moles of salicylic acid and acetic anhydride required = 555.56/0.6=926 mol
Molar mass of salicylic acid =138 g/mol
mass of salicylic acid =138 g/mol * 926 mol = 127788 g
Molar mass of anhydride =102 g/mol
mass of acetic anhydride =102 g/mol * 926 mol = 94452 g
b)
cost for salicylic acid =$110.5* 127788 /500 = $28241
cost for acetic anhydride =$56.2* 94452 /1000 = $5308
total cost = $28241 + $5308 =$33459
c)
This is not chemistry and should be given in your book
