Explanation / Answer

50. True

The pelvic cavity is a body cavity bounded by the bones of the pelvis. It contains the reproductive organs, urinary bladder, pelvic colon and rectum. It also contains major arteries, veins, muscles and nerves. The pelvic cavity can be differentiated into:-

Lesser pelvis or true pelvis is the space enclosed by the pelvic girdle and pelvic brim.

Greater pelvis is the space enclosed by the pelvic girdle above and in front of the pelvic brim. It is considered to be the part of abdominal cavity that is why it is called as the false pelvis.

51. Pelvimetry

It is the method to assess the female pelvis in relation to the birth of the baby.

Traditionally pelvimetry was performed routinely to find whether spontaneous labour was advisable or not. Women with small pelvises received caesarean sections instead of giving natural birth.

Pelvic axis is the hypothetical line joining the center point of each of the four planes of the pelvis. It curves through the center point of the pelvic plane of outlet, the pelvic plane of least dimension, the pelvic plane of greater dimension and the pelvic plane of inlet. It is also called as the plane of pelvic canal.

The pelvic brim is apple - shaped line forming the edge of the pelvic inlet. This line passes through the prominence of the sacrum, the arcuate and pectineal lines and the upper margin of the pubic symphysis.

52. False

The male pelvis is taller, narrower, compact and stable as compared to female pelvis which is typically larger and broader due to the reproduction capacity of the female. The female pelvic joint surfaces are smaller and flatter as compared to male pelvises which are larger, robust and irregular.

53. True

The muscle attachment points are more well defined in the bones of the males than of the females due to the larger size of the muscles in the males.

Within the same population males tend to have more bone development at the muscle attachment sites.

54. Male

The female pelvises have evolved to its maximum width for childbirth and the male pelvises have optimized for bipedal locomotion. Therefore the female pelvises are larger and wider as compared to the male pelvises which have rounder pelvic inlet.

55. 30

The lower extremity contains 30 bones. It includes the femur, patella, tibia, fibula, tarsal bones, metatarsal bones and phalanges.
