Question
You have identified some intermediates in threonine synthesis: A, B, C, D and E. You grow a few of your mutants in the presence of these different intermediates to determine the order in which the gene products act. Below are your results. A (+) means growth and a (-) means no growth. Given the data below, draw the best possible pathway for the synthesis of threonine. The diagram should use arrows to indicate one intermediate being changed to another intermediate. Indicate which gene produces the product responsible for the conversion by listing the mutant in that gene above the arrow. For example, if the gene product that is mutant in mt8 is responsible for converting A to B that would be drawn as:Explanation / Answer
First possibility- AMt1 DMt7 CMt4 E?BMt2 Threonine
Second Possibility- AMt1 DMt7 CMt4 B? EMt2 Threonine
Logic-
1. Mt1 does not grow on A as its (-) but grows on all other (+) Take Mt1 as upstream to draw diagram.
2. Likewise Mt2 does not grow on any intermediate except Threonine Take Mt2 as downstream
3.Mt4- downstream for A,C and D.
4.Mt7-downstream of A and D.
5.B to E conversion responsible gene is not detemined from the above given data-So let it as ? mark.
