Question
The chromatogram below is for a solution containing a mixture of limonene and cymene, two naturally-occurring compounds found in lemon peel.
Limonene and cymene are present in an unknown proportion, so enough chlorobenzene is added to make its concentration in the solution equal to 0.0025 M.
Given that chlorobenzene has the lowest boiling point, and cymene has the highest boiling point, use the provided information to calculate the concentration of limonene in the mixture in moles per liter.
chlorobenzene has the lowest boiling point, and cymene has the highest boiling point, use the provided information to calculate the concentration of limonene in the mixture in moles per liter
Explanation / Answer
Gas Chromatography principle depends on the boiling point of the sample. At a particular method of analysis, lower boiling samole comes out first from the column.
So, Peak A - is Chlorobenezne
Peak B - is for limonene and
Peak C - is for cymene
In this experiment Chlorobenzene is the internal standard and its concentration = 0.0025M.
From peak area and standard concentraion we can calculate the molar concentration of limonene and cymene.
So, the concentration of limonene =2021.3*0.0025/327 = 0.0155 M or 0.0155 moles per liter.
And the concentration of cymene = 632.5*0.0025/327 = 0.0048 M or 0.0048 moles per liter
