Question
This is similar to experiment 6.3A in Schoffstall et al, p249. Please read the background to this experiment on pages 246-248. Assemble apparatus as outlined in figure at right: a dry (from oven) 10 ml round-bottom / recovery flask equipped with magnetic stir bar is fitted with a dry Claisen adapter (also from oven), a drying tube (with CaCl_2) (on front bench), and a screw cap with Rubber / Teflon septum (gel side of septum should face out). Complete the table below id your notebook, calculating the volume of (-) -infinity-Pinene and the volume of Borane -THF you will need to measure in order to run the reaction on a 3.30 mmol scale of pinene (highlighted sections). Calculate how much final product (in grams) you expect to get. Note that one molecule of borane can react in principle with up to three molecules of alkene, though this may be lower if the alkene is sterically demanding. Let your instructor check your notebook for correctness. + BH_3 - THF rightarrow_heat^step 1 A + NaOH + H_2O_2 rightarrow_heat^step 2 B Hydroboration: Add (-)-infinity-Pinene by syringe in one portion to the flask.Explanation / Answer
