Question

You have isolated a gene from a self incompatible plant, Solanum sofaaceae, better known as the "couch potato plant." You show the gene co-segregates with the S locus and that plants with different S allele genotypes have different alleles of this gene. Therefore, you name the gene L00KS LIKE S LOCUS (LLS) How can self incompatibility increase the fitness of a population of plants? You do the breeding behavior experiments summarized in the table below in order to determine the type of self incompatibility exhibited by the couch potato plant. What type of self incompatibility does the couch potato plant exhibit? Justify your answer.

Explanation / Answer

a. Self-incompatibility ensures that the inferior features of the population don't keep in accumulating in progeny due to inbreeding. It ensures that two different breeds mate and lead a superior progeny. Thus helping in promoting the fitness of population of plants.

b. Potato shows gametophytic self-incompatibility in which a pollen with a particular allele can't grow inside the pistil having either one or both same alleles.

So in 1- S1 or S2 pollen can't grow in S1S2 pistil

In 2- Both S3 and S4 pollen can grow in S1S2 pistil.

In 3- The pollen must contain S3 allele to produce a seed with S1S2 pistil.
