Question
1. a) What is the DP in a) PTFE with an average molecular weight of 50,000 g/mol b) with an average molecular weight of 70,980 g/mol? If you want a polymer that is translucent, which would you choose? Why?
b) The DP in in the following polymer is 7500. If all the polymer molecules are of the same length (called a MONOdisperse polymer) calculate a) the molecular weight and b) the total number of chains in 300 g of the polymer and c) the total length of ALL the molecules if they are laid out end to end one after another.
Explanation / Answer
1.
a. molar mass of TFE = 100.02 g/mol
degree of polymerisation = 50,000/100.02 = 499.90
b. degree of polymerisation = 70,890/100.02 = 708.76
For a polymer with translucent properties we would use a polymer of low degree of polymerisation so the density of the poymer would be low and the polymer more translucent.
2.
a. molecular weight of polymer = 7500 x 100.02 = 750,150 g/mol
b. In 300 g = 300 x 6.023 x 10^23/750,150 = 2.41 x 10^20 chains
c. length of the polymer = lenght of one monomer x 7500 x 2.41 x 10^20
Since you have not provided the length of monomer I can give you the formula, you can feed value to calculate.
