Question
6. An unknown compound was known to be benzene (C6H6) or cyclohexane or cyclohexene,. It burned with a very sooty flame and when bromine in dichloromethane was added to the sample, the brown color remained. What was the unknown? Explain why you made the choice you did. Paul has test results of a sooty flame when burned and a positive reaction to sulfuric acid- lie states that his unknown is hexane. That was wrong about his conclusion? Alkanes find many commercial uses. Give at least 3 commercial uses for alkanes and name one alkane that is used as you describe.
Explanation / Answer
(6) An organic compound burned with sooty flame indicates that the compound is aromatic compound.
And the given compound has not decolorised the bromine water indicates that the compound is not unsaturated ( cclohexene).
Therefore the tested compound was BENZENE.
(7)
Benzene undergoes electrophilic substitution rather addition reaction.
But cclohexene doesnot undergo electrophilic substitution reaction but undergoes addition reactions.
(8)
- commercial fuel (propane)
- components of gasoline (pentane and octane)
- natural gas (methane)
- paraffin wax
