Question

Given the reaction:
TiCl4 + 2 H2O -> TiO2 + 4 HCl
Suppose this reaction is run with 500.00 g of TiCl4, 80.00 g of H2O and produces 150.00 g of TiO2. Calculate the amount in grams of HCl gas that is produced during this reaction. (Find the actual yield not the theoretical yield).
Note: lim react. is H2O and the theoretical yield is 323.73 g HCl gas produced. I don't know how to find the actual yield from the theoretical yield.

Explanation / Answer

I dont think you need to calculate the theoretical yield here

Mass of TiO2 produced = 150 g
Molar Mass of TiO2 = 79.9 g/mol
number of moles of TiO2 produced = mass / molar mass
                                                                         = 150/79.9
                                                                          = 1.877 mol

From reaction, for 1 mol of TiO2 produced, 4 mol of HCl is getting produced
so,
number of moles of HCl produced= 4*number of moles of TiO2 produced
                                                                      = 4* 1.877
                                                                       = 7.51 mol

Molar mass of HCl= 36.5 g/mol

mass of HCl= Molar mass * number of moles
                        = 36.5 * 7.51
                        = 274.1 g
Answer: 274.1 g
