Question

Ashmita has the following four container of gas, all at the same temperature and pressure.

Container 1: 1.0L of He

COntainer 2: 2.0L of He

Container 3: 10.0L of He

COntainer 4: 1.0L of Ne

Container 5: 2.0: of Ne

a) Arrange the order of the samples from the lowest to the highest values for the following properties:

     i) Total mass of gas molecules in the flask

ii) Root mean square velocity of gas molecules in the flask

b) Ashmita changes the temperature of container 1 such that its He atoms have the same most probable velocity as the Ne atoms in container 4. What is the ratio of the temperatures in the two flask in this situation?

Explanation / Answer

a) i) From the ideal gas equation,

At constant T and P, mass = V x M

Therefore, the increasing order is:

Container 1 < Container 2 < Container 4 < Container 5 = Container 3

ii) The root mean square velocity of a gas is given by:

As 3, R and T are constant, is inversely proportional to the molar mass of the gas.

As the molar mass of the gas increases, the velocity decreases.

At constant T, every sample of gas will have the same velocity.

Therefore, the increasing order is:

Container 4 = Container 5 < Container 1 = Container 2 = Container 3

b) Most probable velocity =
