Sundra Hammaud Post-Laboratory Questions rUse the spaces provided for the ansovers and additionel paper if necessery) 1. A student was given only one graduated cylinder to use for this experiment. After using it to measure 50.0 mL of the assigned acid, the student failed to rinse or dry the cylinder before measuring out the 50.5 mL. of the base. Would the calculated AHpeusm be higher, lower, or the same as the literature Hnet? Briefly explain this difference as a result of using only one graduated cylinder for the experiment 2. Explain how the following changes in the procedure for this experiment would affect the results (1) A glass beaker was used instead of a pressed polystyrene cup. A pressed polystyrene top was used to cover the polystyrene cup after the acid and base solutions had been mixed 12)Explanation / Answer
1. If the student falied to rinse the flask before masuring the base in the graduated cyllinder then, the amount of base measured would be less then the amount of base actually to be taken. Some amount of base would be neutralized before the reaction even begun. So the amount of heat released dHneutr would be less then the value we expected to get.
2. Effect of following on the result,
(1) Now If instead the student used glass beaker instead of pressed polystyrene cup, the heat of neutralization would be less than the value expected as the heat loss would occur in case of glass beaker.
(2) If polystyrene top was used after mixing the acid and base, the chances of heat loss would be reduced from the top and the value we would get would be close to the value expected for the neutralization reaction.
