Question

I need the oxidation half reactions, reduction half reactions, and net ionic equations for the following reactions:
1)magnesium +0.1M zinc sulfate
2)copper+0.1M zinc sulfate
3)zinc+0.1M copper(II)sulfate
4)zinc+3M HCl
5)copper+3M HCl
6)0.1M potassium iodide+ 0.1M copper(II)sulfate
7)0.1M potassium iodide + 0.02M potassium iodate
8)0.1M potassium iodide+ 0.1M potassium ferricyanide
9)0.1M iron(III) chloride + 0.1M potassium iodide
10)0.1M iron(III)chloride +0.1M potassium bromide
11)3% hydrogen peroxide + 0.1M cerium(IV)ammonium nitrate
12)aqueous iodine + 1M sodium thiosulfate

Explanation / Answer

Oxidation means loss of electrons.

Reduction means gain of electrons

1. Mg + ZnSO4 ===> MgSO4 + Zn

So, Mg loses 2 e to form Mg2+

So, Oxidation: Mg ===> Mg2+ + 2e-

Zn gains 2e- so, reduction reaction : Zn 2+ + 2e- ===> Zn

So, net = oxidation + reduction = Mg + Zn2+ ===> Mg2+ + Zn

2. Cu + ZnSO4 ===> CuSO4 + Zn

Cu loses 2 e to form Cu2+ So, Oxidation: Cu ===> Cu2+ + 2e-

Zn gains 2e- so, reduction reaction : Zn 2+ + 2e- ===> Zn

So, net = oxidation + reduction = Cu + Zn2+ ===> Cu2+ + Zn

3. Zn + CuSO4 ===> ZnSO4 + Cu

Zn loses 2 e to form Zn2+ So, Oxidation: Zn ===> Zn2+ + 2e-

Cu gains 2e- so, reduction reaction : Cu 2+ + 2e- ===> Cu

So, net = oxidation + reduction = Zn + Cu2+ ===> Zn2+ + Cu

4. Zn + 2HCl ===> ZnCl2 + H2

Zn loses 2 e to form Zn2+ So, Oxidation: Zn ===> Zn2+ + 2e-

2H+ gains 2e- so, reduction reaction : 2H+ + 2e- ===> H2

So, net = oxidation + reduction = Zn + 2H+ ===> Zn2+ + H2
