Question

1.) Is a penny pure copper? No, not if it was minted after 1982. What else is in that thing? Why?

2.) Exactly how much copper is in one penny? You probably don't know the answer to this, but what is general a way you could you find this information out, experimentally and firsthand?

3.) How thick is the copper shell? Again, you probably can't answer this at this point, but could you figure this out knowing how much copper is in one penny? If so, what other information would you need about the penny?

4.) What about if we wanted to determine how many atoms thick the penny is? What other information would we need to do that?

5.) Consider these other factors in trying to determine the thickness: Does it matter what year it was minted? Where it was minted? The condition of the penny?

6.) Say you used a chemically-based procedure to determine the amount of copper in a given penny and generated a solution containing copper as a byproduct of your technique. Would it be OK to pour a copper-containing solution down the drain? If so, under what circumstances?

7.) What would be some advantages to recovering the copper from solution? What's a relatively simple way you could go about doing that?

Explanation / Answer

1-From 1837 to 1857, the Penny was made of bronze . Bronze is a metalloid ,it has 95 percent copper, and five percent tin and zinc. From 1857, the cent was 88 percent copper and 12 percent nickel.

Now it is made from Zimc.

2-95% when bronze was used ,88%Cu

3-thikness is known by use of screw gage.

4-first we have to know wt. of penny, then from this mole of Cu.

As we know 1mol=6.023x10^23 atoms
