Question
QUESTION 11 On their website, Janicki Bioenergy gives limited technical information relating to two versions of their Omni Processor technology for converting 'sewer sludge' into electricity and potable water. A key feature of this technology is that the process is self-sufficient in terms of energy. In fact, the energy obtained by burning the dry fuel (i.e. the solid portion ofthe sewer sludge is enough to meet all processing requirements with excess energy being exported as electrical power. No process flow diagram is provided by the company, although it can be assumed that significant engineering thought has gone into recovering as much of the heat from the burnt fuel as practical. It may be assumed that 'sewer sludge' is the combined material (ie. both faeces and urine) gathered in a pit latrine where minimal washing and/or dilution water has been used. Published data on the Internet gives the following ranges for human waste production o Wet faeces 140 to 260 glperson/day o Dry faeces 40 to 80 g solids/person/day o Urine- 1.0 to 1.4 kg/person/day o Solids content of urine-50 to 70 gperson/day For the larger (S200) Omni Processor model, the following information is given on the company website: Maximum rate at which sewer sludge can be processed 92.3 m per day Maximum moisture content of sewer sludge-91% Maximum potable water production rate -86,000 litres per dayExplanation / Answer
The Omni process technology is a new promising way to manage the biowaste in a better way. The technology has multiple benefits such as being a self sufficient system, production of electricity, solid waste disposal, being environment friendly and most important and at the same time interesting is the production of clean water.
The solid waste is dried in dryer before fed into engine. As the solid wastes dry, they release water in the form of moisture. This moisture passes through multi stage vapor filtration before it is condensed to obtain water. This water is passed through series of multi stage filters, distillation, UV disinfection process and ultra filtration. In order to meet WHO and EPA standards this water is subjected to microbial testing, UV injections, ultra filtration, activated carbon and pH correction.
Thus the water from Omni process is clean and fit for human consumption.
