Question

In this experiment, it is possible that things do not always go as planned and sometimes students need a change in procedure to “fix” the problem. After rotovapping the ether fraction to obtain the neutral compound, a student’s flask still contained a clear, colorless liquid that would not evaporate. The neutral compound was obviously spread around on the sides of the flask and was not soluble in the clear liquid. What is this liquid? What is the procedural error that most likely occurred and what should have been done? Suggest a “fix” from this point onward.

Explanation / Answer

The liquid must be water accumulated due to condensation of water vapour.

during the rotovapping the vapour droplets should be cleaned from time to time if not water gets accumulated and seperation becomes difficult

solvent has to be retaken and restart the procedure.
