Question

What trend can you note for the relative reactivities of sodium and lithium and their respective position in the periodic table by looking at a periodic table and doing an experiment?

Compare, briefly, the similarities and differences in the properties of the Group 2A elements magnesium and calcium with the Group 1A element sodium and lithium. Rationalize their contrasting behavior? Use of the position of the elements in the periodic table and if possible the electron configuration for each element. Li: 1s22s1   Na 1s22s22p63s1   Mg 1s22s22p63s2 Ca 1s² 2s² 2p 3s² 3p4s²

Explanation / Answer

The reactivity increases with decrease in size of the atom. this is true with Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs and Fr similarly the other table too.
