Question

1. The solvent which is used in substitution reactions can greatly affect the rate of the reaction. In general substitution reactions are performed in polar solvents. SNI reactions are favored by polar protic solvents and SN2 are favored by polar aprotic solvents. Polar protic solvents contain O-H or N- H bonds. Polar aprotic solvents do not have these bonds. Classify each of the following as polar protic or polar aprotic solvents. If the solvent is not polar, then label it as non-polar. For each of the solvents above, indicate which would favor SNI and which would favor SN2. 2. For each of the following reactions, indicate whether the mechanism will be SNI or SN2 and briefly explain your choice. Where applicable, indicate the stereochemistry of the product formed. You may want to refer to table 9.9 on page 363 of your textbook to help answer this question.
