(PThe dipole moments of acetonitrile, CH,CN, and methyl iodide, CH.l, are 3.9 D and 1.62 D, respectively. (a) Which of these substances has greater dipole-dipole attractions among its molecules? (b) Which of these substances has greater London dispersion attractions? (c) The boiling points of CHCN and CH3I are 354.8 K and 315.6 K, respectively. Which substance has the greater overall attractive forces?Explanation / Answer
a) Higher dipole moment empolys higher dipole-dipole attractions and hence molecules of CH3CN will have stronger attractive forces than CH3I
b) Highe london dispersion attractions are more for a substance of higher molecular weight. CH3I molecular weight is more than CH3CN and hence London dispeorsion forces are more in CH3I.
c) Higher the boiling point higher the energy required for changing the phase and stonger the overall attractive forces between the molecules. Hence CH3CN molecules will have more overall attractie forces.
