int mal boiling points, as shown. Rationalize the difference in have the same IUI the molecula boiling points. [Sections 11.2 and 11.5] 11.7 The phase diagram of a hypothetical substance is 1.0 0.5 E 100 200 300 Temperature (K) (a) Estimate the normal boiling point and freezing point of the substance. (b) What is the physical state of the substance under the following conditions? T 150 K, P 0.2 atm; (ii) T 100 K, P 0.8 atmi (iii) T 3 300 K, P 1.0 atm 11.8 At three different temperatures, TI, T2, and T3, the molecules in a liquid crystal align in these ways:

Explanation / Answer

ANSWER

(a) Boling point is the temperature at which a liquid changes to gaseous state (Boils) At atmospheric temperature. Red line represents the equilibrium between liquid and gas. The point on red line which CORRESPONDS TO 1 ATM PRESSURE is the boiling point of substance. From the given diagram it is approximtely 370K.

The Blue curve represents the equilibrium between solid and liquid. The temperature corresponding to 1 atm on the blue curve is the freezing point

(b) (i) Physical state at temperature 150K and pressure 0.2 atm

It can be simply observed from the diagram. The physical state is GAS

(ii) Physical state is SOLID

(iii) Physical state is LIQUID.

(c) Triple point is the point in the diagram where all the three curves meet. IIt corresponds to temperature of approximately 190K (remeber you can get exact value from diagram by using a scale) and pressure 0.4 to 0.5 atm.
