Question

A balloon is floating around outside your window. The temperature outside is 27 C , and the air pressure is 0.700 atm . Your neighbor, who released the balloon, tells you that he filled it with 3.80 moles of gas. What is the volume of gas inside this balloon?

2. A 12.0 L gas cylinder is filled with 6.00 moles of gas. The tank is stored at 5 C . What is the pressure in the tank?

3. A 200. L kiln is used for vitrifying ceramics. It is currently operating at 1295 C , and the pressure is 1.025 atm . How many moles of air molecules are within the confines of the kiln?

4. A 20.0 L gas cylinder has been filled with 7.20 moles of gas. You measure the pressure to be 4.50 atm . What is the temperature inside the tank?

5. The density of liquid oxygen at its boiling point is 1.14 kg/L , and its heat of vaporization is213 kJ/kg .

How much energy in joules would be absorbed by 3.0 L of liquid oxygen as it vaporized?

Explanation / Answer

The first 4 questions are answered based on ideal gas equation PV =nRT and R= 0.0821L atm mol-1

1) Given T= 300K, P =0.7atm, n=3.8, then volume is

     V= nRT/P = 133.7L

2) Given V=12L, n=6, T= 278K then P =nRT/V = 11.4atm

3) V= 200L T= 1568K , P=1.025 atm then n= PV/RT = 1.592

4) Given V= 20L, n= 7.2 , P=4.5 atm then T = PV/nR =152.25K

5) Weight of 3.0L of liquid oxygen = volumex density = 3x1.14 kg

heat of vaporization = 213kJ/kg

thus heat required to vaporize 3L of oxygen = 3x1.14 x 213 = 728.46kJ
