Question
The particle on a ring is a useful model for the motion of electrons around the porphine ring (2), the conjugated macrocycle that forms the structural basis of the haem group and chlorophylls. Treat the phorphine as a circular ring of radius 440 pm, with 20 electrons in the conjugated system moving along the perimeter of the ring. In the ground state of the molecule, each energy level is occupied by two electrons.
There are two solutions about this problem on Chegg, but they all assumed there are 22 electrons with two electrons in each of the lowest 11 energy levels so that the highest occupied states is ml = ±5. I don't understand where those 2 extra electrons come from and how to determine 'ml'
