Question

Researchers have characterized the niches of Darwin's finches by beak size (which correlates with diet) and the niches of salt marsh grasses by position in the intertidal zone. How would you characterize the niches of sympatric candid species such as red fox, coyote, and wolf in North America? Or felids, such as ocelots, pumas, and jaguars in South America? What characteristics or environmental features do you think would be useful for representing the niches of desert plants? Or the plants in temperate forest or prairie?

Explanation / Answer

Niches in sympatric canid species is characterised by spatial partioning. Red foxes use vegetative and landscape ruggedness characteristics not regularly used by coyotes which use moderate ruggeddness. Niches for felids such as ocelots, pumas and jaguars are the presence and distribution of the type of prey.

The niches of desert plants or the plants in temperate forest or prairie are characterised by the presence of environmental features like the type of soil and water availability.
