Question
The following data for Fe-C system are given for Problems 1 and 2 Solubility of C in ferrite is 0.02% at 727 degree C Eutectoid temperature of Fe-0.8%C alloy; 727 degree C Density of iron = 7.86 gm/cm^3 Density of Fe3C = 7.4 gm/cm^3 Relative atomic mass of Fe = 55.85 Relative atomic mass of C = 12.01 An Fe-0.8%C alloy is isothermally transformed to pearlite at 700 degree C has an interlamellar spacing of 280 mum. From the data given, calculate the widths of the ferrite and cementite lamellae in the pearlite. If the same alloy is transformed to pearlite at 665 degree C, what will be the widths of the ferrite and cementite lamellae in the pearlite?Explanation / Answer
density of ferrite = 7.86 gm/cm3
density of cementite = 7.4 gm/cm3
Fe=0.8%C
Note that in reality density of cementite is a little higher than that of ferrite.
% ferrite in pearlite = (7.86 - 0.8) / (7.4 - 0) x100 = 95.4%
then % Cementite lamellae in pearlite = 4.6%
Therefore the ratio of the widths of the two = 4.6/95.4 = 0.048.
