Question

Explain Please.

For the following reaction between Mohr's salt (iron as FeSO_4(NH_4)_2SO_4 6H_2O) and potassium dichromate (dichromate as K_2Cr_2O_7), determine the volume (in milliliters) of a 0.220 M solution of Mohr's salt that is needed to fully react with 0.0800 L of 0.220 M potassium dichromate. (The reaction is shown in its ionic form in the presence of a strong acid.) Cr_2O_7^2- + 6Fe^2+ + 14H^ + rightarrow 2Cr^3+ + 6Fe^3+ + 7H_2O) Mohr's salt volume = For the same reaction, what volume (in milliliters) of 0.220 M potassium dichromate is required to fully react with 0.0800 L of a 0.220 M solution of Mohr's salt? potassium dichromate volume =

Explanation / Answer

(a) Number of moles of dichromate , n = Molarity x volume in L

                                                       = 0.220 M x 0.0800 L

                                                      = 0.0176 mol

According to the given balanced equation ,

1 mole of dichromate reacts with 6 moles of Mohr's salt

0.0176 mole of dichromate reacts with M moles of Mohr's salt

M = ( 6x0.0176) / 1

   = 0.1056 moles

So Volume of Mohr's salt(in L) is , V = number of moles / Molarity of Mohr's salt

                                                    = 0.1056 mol / 0.220 M

                                                    = 0.48 L

                                                   = 0.48x1000 mL              Since 1 L = 1000 mL

                                                  = 480 mL

Therefore the volume of Mohr's salt is 480 mL

(a) Number of moles of Mohr's salt , n' = Molarity x volume in L

                                                      = 0.220 M x 0.0800 L

                                                      = 0.0176 mol

According to the given balanced equation ,

1 mole of dichromate reacts with 6 moles of Mohr's salt

M mole of dichromate reacts with 0.0176 moles of Mohr's salt

M = ( 1x0.0176) / 6

   = 0.0029 moles

So Volume of dichromate (in L) is , V = number of moles / Molarity of dichromate solution

                                                    = 0.0029 mol / 0.220 M

                                                    = 0.013 L

                                                   = 0.013x1000 mL              Since 1 L = 1000 mL

                                                  = 13 mL

Therefore the volume of dichromate soltion is 13 mL
