Question

a student is studying the equilibrium described by

ng ry, ed A student is studying the equilibrium described by Equation 19. 4. heat + CoSO4 7 H20(s, pink) + 7 SOCl2(1) CoSO4(s, blue) + 7 SO2(g) +14 HCI(g) (Eq. 19) Using microscale techniques and working in a fume hood, the student mixes pink CoSO4.7 H20 with soci2 and heats the mixture in a covered container. The solid turns blue. The student removes the cover from the container and stirs the blue solid. After replac- ing the cover, the student cools the mixture, but ob- serves no color change. Briefly explain the basis for the student's observations. by 18)

Explanation / Answer

When the CoSO4 is heated by the student, it's water of crystallizatoin is lost and plain blue CoSO4 is formed. Now when lid is removed, the SO2, HCl and water vapours moves out of the tube, leaving behind residue of CoSO4 which on colling due to it's structure remains blue.
