help please
3. You have been given the task of purifying a 60 mL sample of toluene. In order to develop your plan of action, you ask about the impurities likely to be present in the sample. You are told that it contains small amounts of acetone (~10%).
a Which technique would you choose for the purification process? Why? (1 point)
b. Clearly describe the procedure you would use. (3 points)
c. What simple chemical test, performed with the original sample and the purified product, will help you confirm that the acetone impurity has been removed during the purification process? (1 point)
Explanation / Answer
Solution :-
a)Boiling point of the acetone = 56 C
Boiling point of the tolune = 110 C
So using the distillation technique we can separate the both components. Because the boiling points are distinct and can be separated easilly.
b) Add a tolune sample to the distillation flask and heat should be provided so that the acetone which has lower boiling point will evaporate first and condense to separate out. Then we can get the separate pure form the acetone and tolune.
c) We can use the iodoform test to confirm if tolune is pure or not
when iodine is added to the solution and if it gives the yellow color precipitate that means the acetone is present in the solution because acetone gives the positive iodoform test. But if the yellow precipitate is not form after adding the iodine then it indicates that tolune is pure and it do not contain any acetone.
