Question

A student recorded the following information for the qualitative ion tests on an unknown hydrate:

A. cation identified: barium

B. anion tests:

The addition of 1.0mL of 6.0mol/L HNO3 to a 1.0mL aqueous sample of the unknown hydrate gave NO reaction.

The addition of 1.0mL of 6.0mol/L HNO3 plus 1mL of 1.0mol/L Ba(NO3)2 to a 1.0mL aqueous sample of the unknown hydrate gave NO reaction.

The addition of 6 drops of 0.10mol/L AgNO3 and 1 drop of 6.0mol/L HNO3, resulted in the formation of a white precipitate.

a) Identify the anion present in the hydrate salt? Support your answer with the relevant balanced net ionic equations for the reactions that result in the formation of the white precipitate.

I figured out Cl- is the anion present but can't figure out how to do the equations.

Explanation / Answer

Cl- + HNO3 -------> No reaction

Cl- + HNO3 + Ba(NO3)2 --------> No reaction

Cl- + AgNO3 + HNO3 ( for medium) ------------> AgCl (white precipitate)

Hence the anion is Cl- ion

Net ionic equation is

Cl- (aq) + Ag+ (aq) --------> AgCl (s)

Hence the salt is BaCl2
