Question
2. 3. You are working in a geochemistry lab, and you need dilute standards for your field work. In particular you need 100. ml. of 4.00 x10 M (that's 400 micromolar) lead nitrate in distilled water. The molar mass of lead II) nitrate is 331.2 g (a) (6 pts) Describe the recipe (the steps!) you need to follow to make 100 ml of a 0.0100 M solution of leadill) nitrate. supplies you need from the Chemistry 115 laboratory, a bottle of solid leadi1) nitrate and unlimited amounts of distilled water. Remember that we only have 1 ml. 2 ml. Assume we have any glassware, equipment and ml. 10 ml. and 20 ml. pipettes. 331Explanation / Answer
3. a) From lead(II) nitrate solution with molar mass of 331.2 g/mol
First prepare a solution of 0.01M of lead(II) nitrate by mixing 0.331 g of lead(II) nitrate in 100 ml of water.
b) Using the relation: M1V1=M2V2
to prepare 100 ml of 0.0004 M solutions of lead(II) nitrate using 0.01M lead(II) nitrate
V1= 100*0.0004/0.01 = 4 ml
So, you have to add 4 ml of the previously prepared 0.01 M solutions of lead(II) nitrate with 96 ml of water to prepare the desired solution. You can do this by using various combinations of the pipettes given. That's not very difficult I guess. 96 ml=20 ml*4+ 10 ml + 5 ml+1 ml, 4 ml= 4*1 ml
