-enzymes have a groove with unique shape where a specific reactants fit and bonds are broken and/or reformed to produce new products. this spot where a reaction accurs is called the:

A) substrate

B) active site

C) hot spot

D) allosteric site

Explanation / Answer

Answer 1: A (As explained below)

Absorption spectrum of a pigment is seen as dark lines or bands. This formation is basically due to the pigment absorbing specific wavelengths. So the wavelengths which are absorbed by the pigment cannot be seen on the screen and those areas where the bands would have normally appeared in case they weren’t absorbed by the pigment, now appears dark due to these wavelengths being absorbed.

Answer 2: A, B, D (As explained below)

Light independent reactions of photosynthesis produce carbohydrates from carbon dioxide molecules. They also use the products of light-dependent reaction - ATP and NADPH - to proceed with forming carbohydrates. Light independent reactions occur in a fluid-filled area of the chloroplast, which is outside of the thylakoid membranes, called as stroma. The option C is not true because water is actually a product of the light independent reaction and not a reactant.

Answer 3: D (As explained below)

Plants can only absorb certain wavelengths of light and these wavelengths happen to be in the spectrum of visible light. Chlorophyll is found to absorb only the red and blue wavelengths of visible light and cannot absorb green light. Hence they appear green to u, because they reflect green light while absorbing most of the other visible wavelengths.

Answer 4: B (As explained below)

Substrate is not part of the enzyme. So this option is incorrect. It is the molecule on which the enzyme acts. Active site is a groove of the enzyme where substrate molecules bind to undergo chemical reaction. So, this option is correct. Hotspots is a term usually referred to temperature sensitive areas of the enzyme. So, this option is incorrect. The allosteric site is the site on the enzyme where molecules other than substrates bind and change the shape of the enzyme affecting its ability to be active. This option seems very similar to the active site option, but here there is change of shape which may also result due to polarity and not necessarily due to chemical reaction. Chemical reactions involve breaking down of bonds and making new products. Thus this option is incorrect.
