Question
In an aligned and continuous glass fiber-reinforced nylon 6.6 composite, the fibers are to carry 84% of a load applied in the longitudinal direction.
a) Using the data provided, determine the volume fraction of fibers that will be required.
b) What will be tensile modulus of elasticity of this composite?
Explanation / Answer
a. Ff/Fm = EfVf / EmVm = EfVf / Em(1- Vf)
Ef: elastic modulus of the fiber material
Em: elastic modulus of the matrix material
Ff or Fm: volume fraction of the fiber or matrix material
So, 0.84/0.16 = 5.25 = (72.5 GPa) Vf /(3 GPa) (1- Vf)
0.217 = Vf /(1- Vf)
Vf = 0.178
b. Tensile modulus of the composite
= m (1 Vf ) + f Vf
= 76 MPa (1-0.178) + 3400 MPa*0.175
= 657.47 MPa
