Question
IR spectroscopy (a-f) Based on the following compounds, answer the following questions on IR spectroscopy. In the, electromaganetic spectrum, high or low frequencies, long or short wavelengths, and large or small wavenumbers are corresponding to high energy. What region-an IR spectrum is called fingerprint region (4000-2000, 2000-1200, 1700-800, or 1400-600 cm^2 circle one)? Two compounds' IR spectra will display, a very strong peak in the region of 1670-1750 cm^-1. What are the two compounds? For your answer to the question b), which Compound displays the peak at higher energy? Which compound would be expected to show IR absorption at 2100-2260 cm^-1? Explain how to distinguish between A and C by using the IR spectroscopy.Explanation / Answer
Solution :-
a). high energy means frequency is high and wavelength is shorter and wavenumber is lower
b) The figure print region in the IR spectrum is the area from 1400 to 600 cm-1 whre more complicated peaks obtained.
c). two compounds shows IR at 1670 to 1750 cm – 1 means those two can have carbonyl group present in them so the the two compounds are compounds shown in the structure B and E
d). The OH peaks appears at about the 3300 – 3600 cm-1 which is higher frequency means high energy
therefore it is compound A.
e)2100 – 2260 cm-1 is the characteristic value for the alkyne triple bond therefore the structure D will show the peaks at 2100 to 2250 cm-1
f) In the IR spectrum of the A structure w will obtain a broad peak at 3300 to 3600 cm-1 which is absent in the structure C because there is no O-H bond present in the structure C.
