Question

47. The elements X, Y, and Z form these compounds: XCl4, XZ2, and YO. What formula would you predict for the compound formed between Y and Z? (Assume normal oxidation states of Cl and O.) (B) YZ2 (D) YZ3 (c) KZ 48. Which element in this periodic table will form an oxide Y203? Main Gro ups Group Num bers1 2 3 4 5 67 8 Fist Feriod Second Period G Third Period QR K L H (B) G (E) R (C) J (A) E (D) L 49. In which pair of particles is the first member larger than the second member? (A) Lit; Be+ (C) Li+; Na+ (D) Be; Mg (B) Li; Li 50. Which ion has the largest radius? (A) Te2(B) F (C) Rb+ (D) Mg2+

Explanation / Answer

47. The oxidation state of Cl is -1.

From that we have oxidation state of X = +4

Then the oxidation state of Z will become -2

The oxidation state of O is -2

So the oxidation state of Y is +2

Therefore there is possibility of forming YZ as its charge becomes zero and forms a neutral compound

According to charge YZ compound is formed.

48. The oxidation state of Y in Y2O3 is +3.

The oxidation state of group 3 is +3

So the element is J

49. In periodic table along the group atomic radius increases and along the period atomic radius decreases.

As the positive charge increases atomic size decreases and as negative charge increases atomic size increases.

So among Li+ and Be2+ along the period Li is larger than Be2+

Among Li+ and Na+ along the group Na+ is larger than Li+

Among Li+ and Li; Li is larger than Li+

Among Be and Mg along the group Mg is larger than Be

50. As the positive charge increases atomic size decreases and as negative charge increases atomic size increases.

So here Te2-has highest negative charge and it is in the 5th group. It has largest radius.
