Question

1) In order to form acetyl salicylic acid, acetic anhydride and salicylic acid is mixed with phospherous acid as a catalyst and heated for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes water is added dropwise. During continuous stirring crystals are staring to be formed. When this happens the reaction mixture is put on ice bath for 15 minutes, so that crystallization can be completed. QUESTION: Explain what has happened so far - including reactions schemes. Why is the solution heated and then cooled? Why is water added? Why do crystals form? What are the crystals and whats is in the liquid?

2) The crystals are filtered from the liquid and washed with ice-water. Then saturated sodium bicarbonate - solution is added to them. Gas is formed. QUESTION: What happens here? Why do you add sodium bicarbonate to the crystals? Why aren't the crystals dissolved when they are washed with ice-water? Why can they then be dissolved with the saturated sodium bicarbonate?

3) After the gasformation has stopped, filtering must be done again. To the filtrate is added 6 M hydrochloric acid. When the crystallisation process has begun, cool in ice-bath for 15 minutes. QUESTION: What happens here? What remains in the filter. What happens when the hydrochloric acid is added? Why cool?

4) The product is then filtrated and washed.
