Question

Which of the following best describes the Activator (Ac) and Dissociation (Ds) transposable elements in maize (corn)?

Ac and Ds are class II, RNA retrotransposons

AC and Ds are IS (Insertion Sequences) type transposable elements

Ac and Ds are class I, DNA transposons

Neither Ac nor Ds contain functional transposase genes.

Ac elements cannot transpose unless a Ds element is present

A)

Ac and Ds are class II, RNA retrotransposons

B)

AC and Ds are IS (Insertion Sequences) type transposable elements

C)

Ac and Ds are class I, DNA transposons

D)

Neither Ac nor Ds contain functional transposase genes.

E)

Ac elements cannot transpose unless a Ds element is present

Explanation / Answer

Explanation: -

Option- "c"-DNA transposons.

Ds(non-autonomous) was found to only move in the presence of Ac, whereas Ac(autonomous) could move on its own.  Either element was able to insert into different locations in the genome, often within genes, which frequently resulted in mutations in those genes.  We now know that the Ds element is a deletion mutant of Ac that has lost the necessary sequences to move on its own.  Other transposable elements can exist as autonomous (encode products for transposition) or non-autonomous elements.
